February 2022 Events


NETWORK FOR NEW MUSIC

On February 27th, Network for New Music presents Intersections, a concert celebrating Jan Krzywicki’s 30th anniversary as the conductor of the Network ensemble and his many contributions to music, featuring: Krzywicki’s Catching Light and the premiere performance of Arabesques de près et de loin II for flute, viola, and harp; Rainbow Chaser, a newly commissioned work from former Krzywicki student Michael Shingo-Crawford; and Waves, a 30-minute major work commissioned for the occasion from Grawemeyer Award-winning composer Sebastian Currier.


PHILADELPHIA CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY 

The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society presents two concerts featuring new music in February. The first on February 9th includes the Philadelphia premiere of Marc-Anthony Turnage’s Without Ceremonysung by bass-baritone Gerald Finley. Then the third installment of Musicians from Marlboro takes place at the Kimmel Center on February 16 including a work by their composer in residence Sofia Gubaidulina.


FIRE MUSEUM PRESENTS 

Fire Museum Presents two concerts in February. The first is on February 11th at the Rotunda and features Falsa, a New York based Sufi music ensemble and Devi Majeske, a classical sitarist and singer-songwriter from Philadelphia. The next day on February 12th, Devin Hoff, Shaina Kapeluck, and River Full of Fruit perform in Fishtown at 2223.fish.


PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA

The first orchestra concert of February in Philadelphia features vocalist Angel Blue performing two Philadelphia Orchestra commissions by Valerie Coleman and Matthew Aucoin. Then, February 12-13 the orchestra presents the world premiere of Mason Bates’ The Rhapsody of Steve Jobs.

STREAMING AND LIVE EVENTS

  • Astral Artists presents harpist Emily Levin in concert at the American Philosophical Society on February 9th. 

  • On Saturday February 12th the PRISM Quartet presents Mending Wall at Bryn Mawr College.

  • In February, Bowerbird presents two virtual late night streaming concerts: first on February 10 will be musician Lea Bertucci performing from her home in New York, then on February 27th organist Parker Kitterman will perform on the pipe organ at Christ Church. On February 18th, Bowerbird presents an in-person concert at The Rotunda featuring French musicians Frank Vigroux and Ulrich Krieger along with a solo set by Philadelphia musician Julius Masri.

  • The ACF Philadelphia Chapter presents two online Artist to Artist talks in February:

  • On Sunday February 27th, <fidget> presents Share Philly featuring electronic musicians Thomas Patteson and Aaron Pond.


ON GOING

  • Opera Philadelphia presents Organ Stops, a musical tour of Philadelphia’s historic pipe organs with the Opera Philadelphia Chorus. Among works to be performed are newer works written specifically for chorus and organ by contemporary composers Hannah Kendall, Melissa Dunphy, Marcus DeLoach, and David Hurd.
