January 2022 Events


PHILADELPHIA CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY


The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society presents several concerts of new music in January. First on January 6 violinist Johnny Gandelsman performs several premieres of newly commissioned works for solo violin. Then January 8 - 9 BalletX collaborates with the Calidore Quartet and cellist Zlatomir Fung at the Perelman Theater. Among the works on the program is the Philadelphia premiere of Breathing Statues by Anna Clyne. The Kronos Quartet with narrator Sam Green will perform a live documentary including music by George Crumb, Laurie Anderson, John Zorn, Aleksandra Vrebalov, and many others. On January 18 soprana Golda Schultz with pianist Jonathan Ware will present a program that includes the Philadelphia Premiere of Kathleen Tagg’s This Be Her Verse. The following day on January 19 flutist Demarre McGill and clarinetist Anthony McGill perform with the Aizuri Quartet perform contemporary works including the world premiere of Serkin Ludwig’s Organistrum. Finally on January 25, PCMS presents Musicians from Marlboro II with a program including Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s String Trio.


FIRE MUSEUM PRESENTS 21st ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION


In 2022 Fire Museum Presents turns 21 and in January presents a three concert anniversary celebration. First on January 20 will be LV Benga Africa at The Rotunda in West Philadelphia. The next day in Fishtown, Fire Museum Presents 75 Dollar Bill and Bark Culture at 2223.fish. Finally on January 22 at the Icebox Project Space, the program features Erik Ruin's Ominous Cloud Ensemble with Skylighght.


PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA


In January, the Philadelphia presents two concerts with new music. First January 14 - 16 the orchestra will perform the world premiere of Mason Bates’s Piano Concerto. Then January 28 - 29 the program includes Ke-Chia Chen’s The Desires, for viola and string orchestra, featuring the orchestra’s principal violist.


STREAMING AND LIVE EVENTS

  • Bowerbird has two events in January. The first on January 8 is an in person concert with Variant 6 at the Icebox Project Space titled I Heart Artemis. Then on January 16 their virtual late night series Liminal States continues with electronic musician Chaka Benson

  • On January 9, Astral Artists presents violinist Timothy Chooi in concert at the American Philosophical Society performing among others the world premiere of Carle Jordan Wirshba’s Sailor Moon Fantasy.

  • Opera Philadelphia presents two works January 2st and 23rd: Oedipus Rex and Lilacs. The first composed by Igor Stravinsky and the second by George Walker.


ON GOING

  • Opera Philadelphia presents Organ Stops, a musical tour of Philadelphia’s historic pipe organs with the Opera Philadelphia Chorus. Among works to be performed are newer works written specifically for chorus and organ by contemporary composers Hannah Kendall, Melissa Dunphy, Marcus DeLoach, and David Hurd.
