July 2021 events


STREAMING AND IN PERSON CONCERTS

This month there are mix of in-person and streaming concerts to hear around the city.

  • Bowerbird presents two streaming concerts in its Liminal States series, the first features King Britt on July 8th then Shahzad Ismaily July 25th, both at 11pm.

  • On July 8, Orchestra 2001 is screening a recording session of CONEXÕES BRAZIL at Cherry Street Pier followed by live Brazilian music.

  • Fire Museum Presents the 20th Anniversary Video Premieres 9 on July 12 featuring a solo performance by Chris Corsano followed by the Amirtha Kidambi/Lea Bertucci duo.

  • On July 14 and 28, Ars Nova Workshop and The Woodlands present Spiritual Atmosferic Cleansing, a recurring “rhythmic release” featuring percussion, song, storytelling, and more led by Philadelphia percussionist Karen Smith.

  • On Saturday July 17 The Rotunda hosts “community” a site-specific sonic organization by Dan Blacksberg. The work brings together improvising and experimental musicians from across the city of Philadelphia who should have had regular chances to play together and regularly cross paths in a vibrant musical ecosystem. The piece is a storyline of musical scenes that will unfold over three 30-minute performances over the course of an afternoon.

  • Streaming from July 22-29, the Philadlephia Orchestra presents A Modern-Day Carmen Fantasy. The performance features Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite  with Philadelphia-based dance company Brian Sanders’ JUNK.


ACF PHILADELPHIA ARTIST TO ARTIST TALKS

In July the American Composers Forum, Philadelphia Chapter presents three live-streamed artist to artist talks curated by Erin Busch, director of the Young Women’s Composers Camp.

  • July 7 features Rajna Swaminathan and Linda May Han Oh, two composers and performers whose creative practice bridges jazz, improvisation, and other musical forms and styles. 

  • On July 14 Missy Mazzoli and Shelley Washington, two versatile artists who are active as composers, performers, and educators, discuss their creative process, reflect on their artistic influences, and share recent work.

  • On July 21 ACF presents inti figgis-vizueta & Charmaine Lee, two composers whose works often intersect with themes of personal identity, improvisation, and collaboration.
