FIRE MUSEUM PRESENTS

Fire Museum Presents returns to in person programming with two performances in October. First on October 23: Fay Victor’s Soundnoisefunk and Dan Blacksberg’s Snake Lines presented at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Atonement in Fishtown. The second will be October 30 at the Kensington Community Food Co-op and feature Siddharth Ashokkumar performing music of South India.

PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA

The Philadelphia Orchestra is back in person this season and will be performing the classics along with work by living composers and music of the twentieth century. Here is a quick rundown of the contemporary music:

PHILADELPHIA CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY

The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society also returns to in-person concerts this month! First on October 14 at the Kimmel Center - The Sphinx Virtuosi performing works by Xavier Foley, Florence Price, Jessie Montgomery, and more. Then on October 19th, the first iteration of Musicians from Marlboro performing among others the Philadelphia premiere of Soliloquy of the Unnamed by Iranian composer Aida Shirazi. And finally on October 29, pianist Shai Wosner joins ECCO to perform compelling new works by Brett Dean, Andrew Norman, and ECCO violinist Michi Wiancko.


PENN MUSIC DEPARTMENT

The Penn Music Department presents three programs of new music. First on October 19, Alan Licht, author of Sound Art Revisited, will be in discussion with sound studies and resonance scholar, Julie Beth Napolin. Then on October 21, a concert of improvisation by percussionist Tyshawn Sorey and pianist Marilyn Crispell followed by a discussion with Guthrie Ramsie. And finally on October 30, Penn Music presents Opus Siniestrus a play by the feminist surrealist Leonora Carrington and directed by Ricardo A. Bracho that concerns the outbreak of a virus that kills only women.

STREAMING AND LIVE EVENTS

  • Orchestra 2001 has two pop up performances at local markets. The first is Our Philadelphia on Oct 2 at East Falls Farmers' Market. The second is Matt Davis’s “Love Lot” on Oct. 15 at the Parking Lot at Ruth St & E Clearfield St.

  • October 2nd and 3rd, Lyric Fest presents The Funny Bone featuring comedic music by composers David Shapiro, Karl Hinze, Lori Laitman, and Juliana Hall.

  • The Philly Music Fest returns for their 5th annual event featuring among others Moor Mother and Irreversible Entanglements. The festival will be Oct. 6 - 10 in venues around Philadlephia.

  • Vocal ensemble Variant6 is collaborating with early music ensemble Piffaro to present several online and in-person concerts during the month of October titled A New Sun Rises. The concerts will include, among others, the premiere of Ave Maris Stella by Kile Smith

  • On October 9th, Ars Nova Workshop presents Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog at Johnny Brenda’s in Fishtown.

  • On October 14th, the American Composers Forum presents ACF Equity Study Group on Ohiyesa: The Soul of an Indian, an online discussion with Dr. Kate Beane.

  • The Philadelphia Clef Club continues its Online Master Class series with Bernard Purdie on October 16th.

  • Astral Artists presents the 2021 National Auditions Winners Concert on October 20th at Stotesbury Mansion.

  • On October 27, ACF Philadelphia presents an online artist talk between composer/producer HPrizm and drummer Gerald Cleaver. During this free Artist to Artist Talk, the two artists will discuss their creative process, reflect on their artistic influences, and share recent work.


ON GOING

  • Opera Philadelphia presents Organ Stops, a musical tour of Philadelphia’s historic pipe organs with the Opera Philadelphia Chorus. Among works to be performed are newer works written specifically for chorus and organ by contemporary composers Hannah Kendall, Melissa Dunphy, Marcus DeLoach, and David Hurd.
